We have started implementing Akufo-Addo’s free water for all directives – GWCL: Dr Clifford Braimah, Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) said, its management has started the implementation of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo directives. The GWCL in a statement copied to Ghana News Agency in Accra on Thursday said: “All customers of the GWCL on category 611 (domestic users) shall have their bills from April, May and June absorbed and paid by Government.” Read more

Ketu South Municipal Assembly orders closure of markets over COVID-19 scare: The Ketu South Municipal Assembly has announced the temporary closure of all markets in the Municipality, following the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus in the Volta Region. The Assembly said it had to close the markets due to the “total disregard” for social distancing in all markets in the Municipality. “All markets in the Municipality, namely Hedzranawo, Agbozume, Aflao, Wudoaba, Gakli, Aflao Border and Denu mini markets are all temporary closed…until further notice with effect from Monday 13th April, 2020. Additionally, all beaches and related entertainment activities in the Municipality are also closed down with immediate effect until further notice,” the Assembly explained in a statement. Read more
COVID-19: Vodafone begins network expansion to address poor connectivity challenges: Telecommunication network, Vodafone says it has begun a network capacity expansion to enable it to meet the increasing demand of its customers amidst the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus disease. This, according to the company is to address the poor network challenges its customers are currently facing in the wake of the pandemic in Ghana. “We are also aware of the slow connectivity in some parts of the country, which is due to increased traffic on our network. Throughout the month of April, we are embarking on network capacity expansion to enable us to accommodate the surge resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic,” Vodafone said in a message to its customers. Government’s approach to feeding the vulnerable recipe for disaster – ChaLoG: The Chamber for Local Governance (ChaLoG) has criticized the government’s manner of feeding the vulnerable saying the spectacle is a recipe for disaster.“This is because the much touted WHO protocol of social distancing is completely nonexistent in almost all the areas ChaLoG assessed,” a statement by the Chamber said. Coronavirus: Food sharing formula reflects lack of planning – Health policy analyst: A research fellow and adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the New York University Prof Nana Kofi Quaky has bemoaned the modalities for food sharing in lockdown areas in Ghana in the wake of Coronavirus. “What we have seen in the areas and the modalities reflect a lack of proper planning. Those modalities for feeding those in the lockdown areas will have to change immediately. If we don’t change the strategy we are going to end up creating a bigger problem.“There is no doubt in my mind that the modalities of the lockdown here have in impacted what we are seeing across the country,” he told Francis Abban on the Morning Starr Tuesday. Two major markets in Volta Region closed as cases increase in Eastern Region: Two major markets in the Volta Region have been closed down as Coronavirus case surge in neighbouring Easter region. According to a press release signed by the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, Municipal and District Assemblies are also being urged to take further steps in enforcing measures to prevent over-crowding on market days in the various markets across the region, while checkpoints have been designated at major entry points for the screening of passengers. CACI Nungua Estate Assembly supports needy members with food items: The Christ Apostolic Church International, Nungua Estate Assembly, has supported 90 vulnerable members with a donation of food items estimated at GH¢4,000. Takoradi Technical University supports COVID-19 fight with 10,000 face masks: The Takoradi Technical University (TTU) has donated 10,000 pieces of face masks to support the fight against the spread of the Coronavirus. The masks were designed by the Fashion Department of the university. Vice-Chancellor of TTU, Prof. John Frank Eshun presented the face masks to the Ghana Health Service, traders, media, as well as other institutions through the Western Regional Coordinating Council. The Takoradi Technical University also inaugurated a COVID-19 taskforce, made up of staff to work with the Regional Coordinating Council on its strategy against COVID-19. Read more

Coronavirus: CSOs gear up to feed the poor and vulnerable in lockdown areas: Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Ghana under the leadership of the Ghana CSOs Platform on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has begun implementing a number of interventions as part of efforts to complement the Government’s effort in the fight against the Corona Virus Disease.
